Master Sheng Yen’s Naughty Childhood 9: Three Willow Branches
After a great deal of effort Chang Jin finally managed to memorize the Chan Gate Daily Recitation. Now Chang Jin was assigned another task by his teacher, to go and find three identical-looking willow branches. In episode nine, Chang Jin initially thought he would fail the task. On his way searching for the willow branches, he bumped into two blind persons: another elder master and a beggar. Their contrasting attitudes towards how to live their lives, however, left Chang Jin greatly puzzled and bewildered. So, could Chang achieve the task of finding three perfectly identical willow branches in the end? And, how did the encounters with the elder master and the beggar inspire Chang Jin? Let us find out how Master Sheng Yen as a teenaged novice realized the value of facing life’s difficulties with positive aspirations, grace, and composure, learning to make good use of his life by striving forward on the bodhisattva path.
